The Old Cabin

The Old Cabin

Sometimes you just must knock the old house down.  The old cabin that originally stood in the location of this modern home was never going to be the home envisioned by this family.   What the old house lacked the property made up for in abondance.  Its west facing land overlooking an inlet of a historic lake.  Mature trees to help the new home get a head start on giving it a warmth only found in older homes.

The approach to the front of the home with its stone veneer base grounds this house to the hill side.  Out of the hand cut stonework the use of steel, wood and symmetrical siding panels highlighted by aluminum channel accents give the home a European feeling.  In a sea of traditional northeast homes, it stands out as a unique creation.

Walking through the front door the large living room opens below you with high ceilings and windows that flood the space with light.  The white walls and ceilings allow for the natural colors and textures of the finishes to take front and center.  The fireplace rising to the ceiling brings warmth to the space with its rich colored stonework.  Flanking the entry landing to each side the main stairs to the second floor join to the bridge over the living room space. Made of heavy steel and wood with deep tones joined with cable rails to maximize the site lines.  The modern European kitchen and dining room join easily with the living room creating and smooth flow from one space to the next.  The patio just off the dining room and kitchen makes outdoor entertaining easy and enjoyable. Tucked into the front of the home near the entry is a sitting room ready to offer a space for quite relaxing.

Just off the living room is the primary bedroom.   A primary suite featuring its own open floor plan with simple separation of a knee wall highlighted by white oak accents and mirrors separate the bedroom and bath.  This minimalist design allows for the natural light to fill a space that would otherwise rely entirely on light fixtures.  Views of the lake and hillside can be had from every corner of the space.

The upper level of the home has two bedrooms each with private balconies. Additionally, two full baths can be found on this level to help with the numerous guests that will be visiting. Should the need arise there is a study for the occasional work that might have to be done. Descending the stairs to the lower level a family room with ping pong table and TV ready for the evening or rainy day.  This space also has easy access to the patios and boat dock.

Lou was a pleasure to work with, a true professional. His work ethic, attention to detail, ability to problem solve, and communicative style made building our magnificent showpiece of a house fun. I would not hesitate to build with him again.
